Many academic, national, and international organizations have cartography or GIS departments and produce maps of the world available online.
European Union.
- Maps of European Union countries.
- Thematic Maps.
- In the EU Bookshop you can search for maps and atlases. Many publications are available for free download.
- The Eurostat website contains publications on European statitics, many of which have thematic maps to display the information. (For example, the "Europe's Regions" section of the Eurostat Yearbook.)
United Nations.
- Globalis. Create thematic maps based on international statistics.
- The UN Cartographic Section produces maps of countries and UN missions.
- UNECA (UN Economic Council for Africa): Harnessing INformation for Development: GIS Tools
- UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization)
- Interactive Atlas of of the World's Languages in Danger.
- The Photobank can be searched for maps. Their collections include many historical maps and atlases, like these images from 16th-18th century Mexican maps.
- Education For All Global Monitoring Report has thematic maps related to education.
- 2009-2010 World Heritage Map
- Cartography Portal. UNESCO maintains a list of map links.
United States.
- Central Intelligence Agency maps.
- University of California, Santa Cruz. UC Atlas of Global Inequality. Create thematic maps that compare countries.
- NOAA: On-Line Chart Viewer. Nautical charts of U.S. Coastlines. Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf, Alaska, and the Great Lakes.
