    Identify your Industry Code
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes are four digit codes used to identify an industry. U.S. government data collected prior to 1997 used the SIC codes. In 1997, in a joint effort with Canada and Mexico, a new classification system was implemented, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).  Subsequent U.S. industry data collection and compilation has used the NAICS codes.  Many databases, like the company directory databases listed above, allow one to search for companies by either classification system.  They will typically include a code lookup feature.  Or, one can look up a known company, and see the codes that are assigned to that company.

    NAICS Code Search
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.
    SIC Code Search
This page from OSHA allows the user to search the 1987 version SIC manual by keyword, to access descriptive information for a specified 2,3,4-digit SIC, and to examine the manual structure.
