Current Issues Affecting African Librarianship (1995-2005)

by Ian Duncanson

This bibliography was compiled by Ian Duncanson, an MLS degree candidate at Indiana University, Bloomington while doing an internship in the Africana collections office. I am not an Africana specialist, but I am very interested in issues in international librarianship. This bibliography covers the years 1995 to 2005 and is designed to give a basic overview of some issues faced by libraries and archives in Africa; the time period of 1995-2005 was decided upon to narrow down the bibliography to the most recent and relevant articles for today's librarians and archivists. Many of the resources concern South African libraries and archives, as that country seems to be the most heavily covered African country in the library literature. The categories were first decided upon generally and then tweaked as the topics further suggested themselves to me. Due to the large amount of articles and time constraints, not all resources have been reviewed by me. The sources consulted for this bibliography project included LISA (Library and Information Science Abstracts), WorldCAT and other assorted bibliographies concerning librarianship in Africa.
