Slavic and East European studies collection
Welcome to the homepage of the Slavic and East European collection of the Indiana University Libraries! IU's Slavic and East European collection is one of the most extensive Slavic and East European collections of North America. The origins of its growth as an extensive area studies library collection trace back to the late 1950s. It was a time when, against the backdrop of the increasing political tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, massive financial support for Slavic and East European study programs on university campuses triggered a rapid development of library collections for those programs throughout the United States. Indiana University was one of the beneficiaries of this national support, so was the Slavic and East European collection. The collection is comprehensive covering more than 15 vernacular language publications and is well developed to support PhD researches in many areas. It is much more than a Russia-focused collection. Polish, Czech, Romanian, and Slovenina collections are also very strong. This webpage, still a work in progress, has two purposes. One is to provide a snapshot of the strengths of the collection as a whole. The other is to serve as a research guide for students and faculty providing descriptions of and access to important sources, and to inform them of new and useful library services that could facilitate efficient research activities. If you have any questions or comments regarding this webpage please contact Wookjin Cheun, librarian for Slavic and East European studies, at wcheun@indiana.edu.
